Fort McAllister State Park Review and Information

Welcome to Fort McAllister State Park. Settled about 30 miles away from Savannah Georgia on the coast sits a historical state park that seems pretty unheard of. Let's step into the past and explore Fort McAllister. Home to the famous Confederate Civil War Fort McAllister. Whether you're looking for history, fishing, bird watching, wildlife, kayaking, hiking, or camping there is plenty to enjoy for able-bodied and disabled, adults and children.

Park Hours: 0700 - 2200

Office: 0800-1700

Historic Site: 0800-1700

When entering Fort McAllister you'll find a great welcome center complete with a store and a civil war history museum.

The welcome store has plenty of gifts, firewood, stickers, beverages, and ice. It is wheelchair accessible and has a restroom attached which you can enter from the outside. You'll find information about the Fort, campgrounds, cottages, and the different park activities. This is where you go for all reservations including bike /kayak rentals. You will also purchase fort/museum tickets here.

Fort and Museum 0800-1700

Entrance Fees are currently $9 per person for entry into both sites, $8 for seniors(62+), and $5 for Youth(6-17). Much of the fort and all of the museum is wheelchair accessible. The fort is all grass in some areas so it may be a little difficult to navigate for some. There is much to see in both. The museum has memorabilia, replicas, and takes you on a tour of the fort's history with a major focus on war.

You will see a guard post, soldier quarters, you get to visit inside the fort, on top of the fort and you can even go into the walls of the fort and see the hospital quarters and some other very eerie historical rooms.

Highly recommended. We're really happy we stayed here for a week at the campgrounds and got to tour the museum and fort.

We only saw the cottages from the outside so we can't leave much of a review but they look really nice and have a view of the water! There are 7 cottages. 1 with a ramp.

Camping: if you're staying on site you are in for a treat. There are primitive sites that you can either drive or hike to and there are RV sites you can book ahead. Total there are 67 sites (tent, trailer, & RV. The sites are all sand and dirt but are all big and at least partially shaded. There are several sites near the bathrooms, 2 handicap sites.

Savage island

Wow! It is beautiful. Besides camping there is a boat ramp, fishing pier, hiking trail, and restrooms. There is a lot of wildlife that come right up to camp including a family of deer, raccoons, squirrels, and armadillos. Sitting outside we have frequent visitors from animals and didn't see any predatory animals during our trip.

If you don't already have one, this is a great camping canopy that is easy to set up and has a mosquito net around it to keep your area bug free. There are some aggressive flies and mosquitos in the park so be aware. The link is my Amazon affiliate link, thank you for supporting!

Facilities on Savage Island

Savage island is the main campsite and it is equipped with primitive and RV sites with full hookups. 50 amp /30 amp but I think it differs site to site so look at the site specifics when you book. There are 2 bath/ shower houses. 1 with 4 unisex private showers/bathrooms (2 are handicap accessible showers) then the other bathroom is a women's bathroom with 2 showers and men's bathroom with 2 showers. Both had a handicap accessible shower.

The bigger bathrooms stay cooler but there is no AC in either so they get hot. They aren't very nice bathrooms but they are clean enough with flush toilets. The first bath house had 2 washer dryers for 3.25 a load and the other had 1 washer dryer for 3.25 a load.

The road when you enter savage island is bumpy but overall not bad. The bathrooms could be cleaner and they closed one for several days during our visit. If the weather is going to be bad be careful and check out the trees nearby. We got hit by a storm when we were there and several trees fell, one on top of someone's camper.

Hiking trail on Savage Island is short 1.4 miles, wheel cheat friendly when dry, and a really beautiful walk. Lots of bugs though.

Overall I would highly rate the park. It's family friendly, disabled friendly. We had a great history lesson.

Best: Fort/ Museum, Wildlife, camping

Worst: bathrooms could be cleaner, bathrooms are hot, and lots of bugs.
